Movie poster for The Crow

10. The Crow

Soulmates Eric and Shelly are brutally murdered. Given a chance to save the love of his life, Eric must sacrifice himself and traverse the worlds of the living and the dead, seeking revenge.

My View:

While The Crow (2024) may have received a slew of negative reviews, I found it to be a captivating and brutal reimagining of the original story. It masterfully delivered a dark, violent, and bloody narrative, which is exactly what fans of the genre crave.

The emotional depth of the film, with its tragic portrayal of two soulmates torn apart by demonic forces, resonated with me. Bill Skarsgård brought a unique intensity to the role of Eric, adding layers to the character’s pain and vengeance. For those who appreciate gritty, gothic stories, this movie is a raw, yet beautiful descent into tragedy.

Trivia:

  • Long Time Coming: This movie has been through a very long production process, dating all the way back to 2008. Several Actors and Directors have been linked with the movie over the years including Bradley Cooper, Jason Momoa, and Luke Evans.
  • Who Should Lead: Many high-profile actors have been considered for the role of Eric Draven. Channing Tatum, James McAvoy, and Mark Wahlberg were all considered for the role.
  • Filming Locations: The majority of this movie was shot in Prague and Penzing, near Munich, which added to its dark, gothic atmosphere.
  • Banned Firearms: The filmmakers of The Crow (2024) chose to ban real guns from the set out of respect for Brandon Lee’s tragic death during the production of the original 1994 film. Lee was accidentally shot and killed by a prop gun, and the incident still haunts many involved in the film industry.
Movie poster for Abigail

09. Abigail

After a group of criminals kidnap the ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, they retreat to an isolated mansion, unaware that they’re locked inside with no normal little girl.

My View:

I found Abigail to be an unexpectedly fun horror flick, much like From Dusk till Dawn, in the way it keeps its blood sucking twist hidden until the creature finally reveals itself. The suspense was gripping, and Alisha Weir did an excellent job portraying the monstrous young vampire. Her transformation from innocent to terrifying was truly impressive. The rest of the cast also delivered strong performances, adding to the tension and intensity that kept me on edge throughout the film.

Overall, it was a bloody good time!

Trivia:

  • A Reimagining: Abigail is a reimagining of the 1936 film Dracula’s Daughter.
  • A Fitting Tribute: The film uses Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake in its trailer, a nod to the classic Dracula adaptations.
  • Filming Locations: The production team used the famous Guinness manor in Dublin, Ireland to film some of the scenes.
  • Jaws: The filmmakers intentionally made Abigail’s teeth resemble a shark’s, with multiple layers, to appear more animalistic and terrifying.
  • Dancing Queen: The directors were so impressed by Alisha Weir‘s dancing that they added more dance sequences to the film.
Alien Romulus Movie Poster

08. Alien Romulus

While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonists come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

My View:

Alien: Romulus exceeded my expectations, fitting seamlessly between the original Alien and Aliens. The movie captures that same intense, claustrophobic horror while expanding on the mythology that Prometheus introduced, even referencing the Prometheus missions to keep the universe tightly interconnected. I appreciated how Álvarez’s direction honored the franchise’s legacy, balancing suspense and action without over-relying on CGI. The continuity with both the Weyland-Yutani lore and the larger Alien mythology felt like a respectful nod to long-time fans, giving us a gripping addition that bridges the classic films and newer lore beautifully.

Trivia:

  • Authentic Reactions: Director Fede Álvarez used an unconventional scare tactic to get a realistic reaction from actress Isabela Merced. In one scene, he surprised her by having a bucket of cold water thrown at her, resulting in a look of genuine shock as she gasped for air.
  • Hybrid Xenomorph Design: Álvarez chose to blend practical effects with live-action performers for the Xenomorphs, combining animatronics with actors in suits to add realism. This method kept the horror more grounded and immersive for the actors and audience alike.
  • Timeline Placement: The film is set between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), allowing it to explore the classic Alien universe and giving fans nostalgic Easter eggs, such as a high-tech version of the Nostromo’s AI system.
  • Minimal CGI: Álvarez, known for his practical effects focus, minimized the use of CGI, especially for gore and creature effects, to give the movie a more tactile, gritty atmosphere reminiscent of Ridley Scott’s original vision.
A Quiet Place Day One Movie Poster

07. A Quiet Place: Day One

A young woman named Sam finds herself trapped in New York City during the early stages of an invasion by alien creatures with ultra-sensitive hearing.

My View:

I thoroughly enjoyed A Quiet Place: Day One. It was thrilling to finally witness the beginning of the alien invasion in such a visceral way. The tension was relentless, with the alien creatures stalking anyone who dared make a sound. Seeing this terrifying moment unfold in the heart of a bustling city added a fresh intensity, and the cast’s performances were captivating. The film’s balance of horror and suspense kept me engaged throughout, making it a fantastic addition to the franchise.

Trivia:

  • Filming Locations: Although set in New York City, much of the movie was filmed in London, with areas like Churchill Street in Canary Wharf transformed into chaotic, abandoned NYC streets, complete with wrecked cars and debris.
  • Silent Communication Challenge: Lupita Nyong’o, one of the lead actors, mentioned that learning to communicate emotions and intentions without spoken words was challenging yet exciting, as even the smallest movements held significant meaning in this tense, silent world.
  • Scaredy Cat: Lupita Nyong’o had a significant fear of cats before filming A Quiet Place: Day One. Her character, Samira, has a pet cat, which posed a challenge as Nyong’o initially tried to convince the director to change the animal to something else.
  • Furry Friend: The cat Frodo was played by two cats named Nico and Schnitzel.
Longlegs Movie Poster

06. Longlegs

In pursuit of a serial killer, an FBI agent uncovers a series of occult clues that she must solve to end his terrifying killing spree.

My View:

I found Longlegs incredibly captivating and deeply unsettling. The film’s atmosphere was intensely creepy, especially with those flashes of demons lurking in the background, a subtle but powerful detail that added to the overall sense of dread.

Nicolas Cage’s portrayal of the satanic serial killer was chilling, and Maika Monroe’s performance as an FBI agent unraveling her own dark family secrets was equally compelling. The layered visuals and eerie soundtrack kept me on edge, making this movie a memorable psychological horror that left me thinking long after it ended.

Trivia:

  • Hidden Visuals: The movie contains 15 subtle appearances of demonic figures in the background, which are almost unnoticeable. These hidden images add a layered experience for audiences to uncover on repeat viewings.
  • Cast and Roles: Nicolas Cage not only stars as the satanic serial killer known as Longlegs but also produced the film under his company, Saturn Films. The cast includes Maika Monroe as FBI agent Lee Harker, along with Alicia Witt and Blair Underwood in key roles.
  • Prank Call: To promote the film, Neon created a phone number (4586664355) which, if dialed, played a prerecorded, extremely disturbing message from Nicolas Cage as the killer.
  • Unique Marketing Strategy: Neon’s marketing approach was innovative, with cryptic online videos, billboards with hidden messages, and even a cipher published in the Seattle Times. This guerrilla strategy generated buzz and speculation leading up to the release.
The Substance Movie Poster

05. The Substance

A fading celebrity takes a black-market drug: a cell-replicating substance that temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself.

My View:

The Substance was a wild ride from start to finish. I had no idea what I was in for. It was truly an intense, surreal experience. The film’s blend of body horror and dark humor was unpredictable, keeping me on edge throughout. Demi Moore looked absolutely incredible at 61, and her performance brought depth to her character’s complex struggle with fame, beauty, and aging in an unforgiving industry.

The film’s themes about society’s obsession with youth and appearance were explored in an exaggerated, almost nightmarish fashion that only added to the madness. I came out of it thinking about how rare it is for a horror film to mix such profound social commentary with visceral horror. It’s definitely one of those movies you won’t forget anytime soon.

Trivia:

  • Social Commentary on Beauty and Aging: The film tackles the entertainment industry’s obsession with youth. Demi Moore’s character, Elisabeth Sparkle, reflects this theme as she struggles with her self-image and society’s brutal treatment of aging women. Her character’s tragic arc gives a human touch to the film’s horror.
  • Missing Cast member: Ray Liotta was cast in the film in February 2022, but he died in May that year before he could film his scenes. Dennis Quaid replaced him, but Liotta is still mentioned in the director’s “Thank You Notes” during the credits.
  • Keeping it Under Wraps: Demi Moore said she was nervous about filming full nudity at age 61 and felt vulnerable. But she credited co-star Margaret Qualley, who was 29 at the time of filming and portrayed a younger version of her character, with making her feel comfortable on set.
MAXXXINE Movie Poster

04. MaXXXine

In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past.

My View:

MaXXXine was an incredible capstone to the X trilogy and delivered a satisfying, wild conclusion to Maxine’s journey. Watching her transformation from survivor to Hollywood star felt both thrilling and rewarding. The trilogy’s progression, from the raw horror in X to the unsettling origins in Pearl and the intense finale in MaXXXine, feels like a perfectly paced horror epic.

The film’s nod to classic horror, especially the chase scene up to the iconic Psycho house, added a brilliant layer of homage and suspense. Ti West’s dedication to character development and attention to horror’s cinematic roots made this journey unforgettable.

This trilogy is more than horror; it’s a powerful commentary on ambition, survival, and fame that I enjoyed immensely.

Trivia:

  • Film Influence on Society: Director Ti West crafted MaXXXine as part of a trilogy, exploring how cinema influences society, particularly during the VHS boom of the 1980s. West explained that while each movie in the series can stand alone, they’re interconnected thematically to build a larger narrative about the horror genre and Hollywood.
  • Setting and Theme: Set in 1985, MaXXXine takes place after the events of X, where Maxine Minx, the only survivor of the previous film’s Texas massacre, is on a quest for fame in Hollywood. However, her ambitions are shadowed by the deadly Night Stalker, a mysterious killer who targets her.
  • Mia Goth’s Enthusiasm: Goth has shared that she believes MaXXXine to be the best installment of the series. Her excitement stems from the evolution of her character and the continuation of Maxine’s chaotic journey through a sinister, fame-obsessed Hollywood.
Immaculate Movie Poster

03. Immaculate

Cecilia, a woman of devout faith, is warmly welcomed to the picture-perfect Italian countryside where she is offered a new role at an illustrious convent. But it becomes clear to Cecilia that her new home harbors dark and horrifying secrets.

My View:

Two movies came out this year with virtually identical storylines, Immaculate, and The First Omen. While The First Omen had its strengths, Immaculate delivered a far more intense and satisfying take on the themes of religious horror and demonic prophecy. The setting within a secluded convent in Italy added an eerie authenticity that amplified the suspense. Immaculate didn’t rely solely on jump scares or predictable horror tropes; instead, it built up an oppressive atmosphere, making the audience feel as trapped as Cecilia within the convent’s walls.

Sydney Sweeney’s performance brought a powerful vulnerability to her role, which elevated the film beyond just a chilling storyline. The psychological tension she conveyed, balancing terror with fierce resilience, made her struggle feel deeply personal and gripping. The cinematography and production design, with nods to classic horrors like Suspiria and Rosemary’s Baby, gave Immaculate a timeless, unsettling aesthetic that stayed with me long after the credits.

Overall, Immaculate managed to be both a modern thriller and a homage to vintage horror, with a brutal finale that truly shocked me. It’s a film that goes beyond typical horror, exploring themes of faith, control, and survival in ways that left a lasting impression.

Trivia:

  • Lead Role and Production by Sydney Sweeney: Sydney Sweeney not only starred in the film as Cecilia but also served as a producer under her production banner, Fifty-Fifty Films. She initially auditioned for the project in 2014 when it was still in its early stages and later revisited the script, bringing it to life nearly a decade later by acquiring it, revising the screenplay, and securing distribution.
  • Filming Location and Setting: The movie was filmed in Rome, giving it an authentic European atmosphere that aligns well with its religious and gothic themes. The storyline’s dark twist involving a convent in Italy reinforces its eerie backdrop.
  • Horror Homages: Immaculate is filled with homages to classic horror films. Cecilia’s arrival in Italy draws direct parallels to Suspiria (1977), and the plot’s themes echo elements from Rosemary’s Baby (1968), especially in how Cecilia’s baby is never fully shown, enhancing the film’s dread through implication rather than explicit horror.
Speak No Evil Movie Poster

02. Speak No Evil

A family is invited to spend a whole weekend in a lonely home in the countryside, but as the weekend progresses, they realize that a dark side lies within the family who invited them.

My View:

Speak No Evil was nothing short of a masterclass in psychological horror. The film captivated me from start to finish with its relentless tension and unsettling atmosphere, which only grew more intense as the story unfolded.

James McAvoy’s portrayal of the sinister host was both terrifying and mesmerizing. He captured the unsettling charm of a villain who is dangerously charismatic yet horrifyingly unpredictable. His performance brought a sense of dread that escalated with every interaction, making each scene feel like a carefully laid trap.

It’s rare for a horror film to reach this level of suspense, and the fact that it very nearly took the top spot in my list this year says it all.

Trivia:

  • Remake of a Danish Original: This 2024 film is a remake of the 2022 Danish horror movie with the same name. James Watkins, known for his work on Eden Lake, took the helm as writer and director for this new adaptation, collaborating with Blumhouse Productions.
  • Opening and Reception: Premiering at the DGA Theater in New York City in September 2024, Speak No Evil debuted to favorable reviews and achieved a solid 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Its suspenseful storytelling and strong performances were highlighted, with McAvoy’s portrayal of psychological horror receiving particular praise.
  • Filming Locations and Delays: Principal photography took place in scenic areas like Croatia and Gloucester, England. Although production was briefly halted by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, it later resumed in Worcestershire at the picturesque Saxon’s Lode Manor House, adding a hauntingly beautiful English backdrop for the suspenseful scenes.
  • Ending Differences and Criticism: While the remake closely mirrors the original’s storyline, the ending diverges in notable ways. In the Danish version, the film concludes on a grim note that was reinterpreted for an American audience, sparking discussions and criticism from fans of the original about cultural differences in horror narratives.
Late Night with the Devil Movie Poster

01. Late Night with the Devil

A live television broadcast in 1977 goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation’s living rooms.

My View:

Late Night with the Devil has truly earned its spot as the top horror film of the year. Some lucky audiences were able to see this back in 2023 but its official release in the UK wasn’t until 2024. This film offers a completely original experience that stands out in the crowded genre of horror.

The blend of live television aesthetics from the 1970s with supernatural elements creates an eerie atmosphere that feels both nostalgic and unsettling. The film cleverly uses the format of a late-night talk show, allowing for unexpected twists and intense moments that keep you on the edge of your seat. As the plot unfolds during a live broadcast, the tension mounts, capturing the essence of how unpredictable live TV can be, especially when mixed with sinister happenings.

The performances, particularly by the lead, are nothing short of mesmerizing. The way the narrative evolves in real-time adds a layer of authenticity and urgency, making viewers feel like they are part of the unfolding chaos. The writing and direction reflect a deep understanding of what makes horror compelling, psychological thrills, dark humor, and unsettling imagery.

Ultimately, Late Night with the Devil is not just a film; it’s an experience that engages the audience in a way few horror films do. It left me reflecting on it long after it ended, making it the standout entry in this year’s top ten. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend diving into this terrifyingly brilliant journey.

Trivia:

  • A Worthy Endorsement: Horror maestro Stephen King publicly praised the movie, calling it “absolutely brilliant.” His endorsement generated even more excitement among horror fans looking for a unique cinematic experience.
  • Filming Location: Although the story is set in New York City, the movie was actually filmed at Docklands Studios in Melbourne, Australia. The production managed to create an authentic ‘70s-era American talk show set, even though it was far from the actual setting.
  • Box Office Easter Egg: In a unique twist, the movie reportedly earned exactly $666,666 on a particular day at the box office, a figure that may have been intentionally orchestrated by the distributor, aligning perfectly with the film’s devilish theme.
  • Directorial Inspiration: Directors Colin and Cameron Cairnes wanted to capture the edgy vibe of late-night television from the ‘70s and ‘80s, blending it with supernatural elements for a truly unsettling atmosphere. Their aim was to evoke the eeriness that can arise when mixing high-stakes live TV with dark, paranormal themes.
